Washington, DC – U.S. Congressman Greg Pence (IN-06) testified on behalf of Hoosiers from the Sixth District of Indiana today in front of the House Committee on Rules. In his testimony, Pence expressed strong opposition to remote voting, voting by proxy and virtual hearings.
Pence’s remarks are below.
“Chairman McGovern and Ranking Member Cole, thank you for allowing me to testify on the House Democrats proposal to authorize remote voting by proxy on the House floor and official remote committee proceedings.
Mr. Chairman, throughout our nation's history, the House of Representatives has cast their votes here under all circumstances.
Tomorrow, we will consider legislation that represents one of the largest power-grabs by a select few in the history of Congress.
This legislation was written without the participation from more than half of the country’s Representatives.
Mr. Chairman, I know that the coronavirus pandemic continues to pose a real threat to our health, but these concerns do not supersede the responsibility we have to our constituents.
I believe it is wrong to pass my vote to someone who may have never stepped foot in our district.
This voting card does not belong to me. It is not mine to proxy to my peers. This voting card belongs to the sixth district of Indiana.
Today I am here to uphold my oath to well and faithfully represent the Hoosiers in Indiana’s 6th District that sent me to Washington and cast my vote on their behalf.
I am here to stand with the doctors, nurses, law enforcement officials, firefighters, EMTs and healthcare providers.
The truckers, scientists, farmers, grocery store employees, fast food workers, delivery drivers, and postal workers.
The Marines, Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, Coasties and the other heroes who are still showing up for their communities and their country every day.
Mr. Chairman, I respect that some of my peers are concerned about coming here for their own personal safety but that does not absolve Congress’ responsibility or mine.
The definition of Congress is, I quote, a national legislative body, especially that of the United States, that meets at the Capital in Washington D.C.
The Trump Administration is working here. The Senate is working here. The U.S. House of Representatives should lead by example and come to work here too.
Thank you and I yield back,” said Congressman Pence.
