Greg Pence Signs Discharge Petition to Stop Speaker Pelosi from Obstructing Small Business Support

September 30, 2020

Washington, DCU.S. Congressman Greg Pence (IN-06) signed a discharge petition in the U.S. House of Representatives, filed by Congresswoman Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA). If successful, the discharge petition would advance the Paycheck Protection Program Extension Act, legislation that provides targeted support for America's small business owners by freeing up $138 billion in unspent Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) funding and extending the program through the end of 2020.

"Small business owners and workers need our support now more than ever. However, Nancy Pelosi continues to block necessary aid to American employers and workers. I am proud to sign the Discharge Petition to revive the Paycheck Protection Program to let Speaker Pelosi know her political games must be stopped," said Congressman Pence."The Paycheck Protection Program has helped countless small businesses stay afloat, and H.R. 8265 needs to be brought to the floor to ensure our nation's small businesses get the support they need during this unprecedented challenge our country faces."

Background:

Congressman Pence cosponsored both the bill, H.R. 8265 and the rule, H. Res. 1116 on September 21, 2020.

218 signatures are required for a discharge petition to be successful. If all 198 Republicans sign the petition, only 20 Democrats must join Republicans in this effort to bring this bill up for a vote. The Paycheck Protection Program Extension Act, authored by House Small Business Committee Ranking Member Rep. Steve Chabot (OH-01), distributes the remaining PPP funds, extends the program until December 31, 2020, and allows businesses to take a second loan.

Democrats "Strongly Considering" Signing Discharge Petition

Multiple news outlets, including Roll Call and The Hill, are reporting that several House Democrats are "strongly considering" bucking their party and Speaker Pelosi to sign Herrera Beutler's discharge petition.
