Greg Pence Announces Nearly $3 Million in Federal Funding to Columbus Municipal Airport for Infrastructure Improvement

August 28, 2020

Columbus, IN – U.S. Congressman Greg Pence (IN-06) today announced that the Columbus Municipal Airport will be the recipient of $2,793,500 in total Federal Aviation Administration Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants for infrastructure and safety improvements, including perimeter fencing. $279,350 was included in this total funding as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act which Rep. Pence supported in March.

"The Columbus Municipal Airport is an important asset in our community. Not only is it utilized by private companies but is also used by our brave armed forces for deployment and training exercises out of Camp Atterbury," said Congressman Pence. "As a top 5 airport within the state of Indiana in terms of operations and overall infrastructure, this funding will help the Columbus Airport continue to grow and improve its services."

Last year, Congressman Pence authored a letter of support for the Columbus Municipal Airport's AIP grant request and implored the FAA to prioritize their request.

The Airport Improvement Program (AIP) airport grant program funds airport infrastructure projects such as runways, taxiways, airport signage, airport lighting, and airport markings. The grants strengthen our nation's aviation infrastructure. Airports are entitled to a certain amount of AIP funding each year, based on passenger volume. If their capital project needs exceed their available entitlement funds, then the FAA can supplement their entitlements with discretionary funding. A complete listing of grants (PDF) and an interactive map of airports receiving funding is available on the FAA website.
