Congressman Pence Urges DOE to Leverage Private Energy Transmission Modernization Efforts

June 30, 2021

Washington, DC – During the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Energy Subcommittee hearing, Congressman Greg Pence discussed efforts Congress can make to advance grid modernization that will benefit Hoosiers back at home in Indiana's Sixth District, and current innovation being done by energy providers in the state.

Excerpts of his remarks and questions are as prepared for delivery are below.

"Modernizing our transmission system for the 21st century is not a partisan issue. However, the self-imposed timelines of the CLEAN Future Act and the Administration's commitments are unworkable."

"Our grid has taken over a century and a half to build, but some of my colleagues are talking about replicating this network in a mere 15 years. We should support private industry stakeholders across the country that are already investing to bring our shared goal into reality. In fact, utilities across my state invest over $2 billion annually to upgrade transmission and smart grid capabilities."

"Can you talk about some of the successful grid modernization R&D initiatives that the tools you mentioned earlier have helped the private sector to develop econ alternatives to achieve this Administration's timeline?"

"If I may, because I'm just running out of time, has private industry invested in some of those things you have recommended?"

"There needs to be a landing strip for this committee to work together on modernizing our grid, but doing so in a way that leverages private investment into transmission technologies and maintains local authority."

"The rapid rush to green envisioned by the CLEAN Future Act would outpace current technologies and move beyond the logistical reality of permitting largescale infrastructure projects. To be clear, I support efforts to modernize our grid – Hoosiers in Southeast Indiana will benefit from transmission technologies that make more efficient use of energy supplies."

"What do you envision happening to local utilities in my district that will be forced to integrate renewables onto the grid before they are able to sufficiently maintain supply in a cost-effective manner?"
